This is a desert, and deserts don’t do moderation.

In the Kgalagadi, temperature swings can surprise even seasoned travellers. Hot days. Cold nights. And in winter, the cold doesn’t just visit. It stays.

At !Xaus Lodge, we encourage guests to pack for both extremes, no matter when you come. Comfort in the desert starts with knowing what to expect.

Summer

(October – March)

The Experience: High heat (40°C+), dry air, dazzling night skies.

Lodge Comforts: Highlighting thatch roofs, ceiling fans, and the swimming pool.

Packing List: Light clothing, sunscreen, wide-brimmed hat, swimwear.

Winter

(May – August)

The Experience: Freezing nights/mornings, frost, and the rapid transition to midday warmth.

Lodge Comforts: Focus on warm bedding, winter sheets, and communal heating.

Packing List: Layers, thermal wear, warm socks, jacket, beanie, gloves

Autumn & Spring

(April & September)

The Experience: The “ideal” window – mild days and comfortable nights.

What is the weather like at !Xaus Lodge?

This is desert country. Expect strong temperature swings: hot days and cooler nights, with winter cold that can linger well below freezing in the mornings and at night.

How hot does it get in summer?

Summer runs from October to March. Daytime temperatures can climb above 40°C (104°F), especially from December through February. Nights are usually warm, sometimes hot.

Do the chalets have air-conditioning?

No. There are no air-conditioners. Chalets are designed for desert conditions with features such as high ceilings, thatched roofs and shaded decks, and ceiling fans help. The pool is available in summer.

How cold does it get in winter?

Winter runs from May to August. Mornings and nights can drop well below freezing, and frost is common. Midday can feel warmer in the sun, but temperatures fall quickly again after sunset.

Is there heating in winter?

Warm bedding, winter sheets and plenty of blankets are provided for nights. Extra blankets are also available on game drive vehicles, and communal rooms are heated.

What should I pack for summer?

For October to March, pack light clothing, sunscreen, a wide-brimmed hat and a swimming costume. You should still bring an extra layer for cooler evenings.

What should I pack for winter?

For May to August, pack layers and proper cold-weather gear for mornings and nights: a warm jacket, beanie, scarf, gloves, thermal wear and warm socks.

When is the best time for mild weather?

Autumn (April) and spring (September) are often ideal: mild days and cool, comfortable nights.

Is stargazing good year-round?

Yes. The desert’s clear air and low humidity make for excellent night skies throughout the year. If you have the option, choose to come at New Moon when the stars are at their brightest.
